GIL GONÇALVES

Professor of tuba/euphonium at University of Évora, Palmela Music Conservatory, Silva Marques Music Conservatory and Leiria Arts Conservatory.

Gil Gonçalves was born in Samora Correia in 1983. He studied music at the Lisbon Conservatory of Music and at the Lisbon Superior Orchestra Academy with Sérgio Carolino. Later, he pursued his studies with FrançoisThuillier at the Amiens Music Conservatory in France. In 2016 he finished master degree at Lisbon Superior School of Music with Adélio Carneiro. Gil has worked in master classes with professors Ilídio Massacote, Sérgio Carolino, Gene Pokorny, Anne Jelle Visser, Oystein Baadsvik, Mel Culberston, Miguel Moreno, Walter Hilgers, Roger Bobo, Oren Marshall, Samuel Hershko, Harri Lidsle e François Thuillier. He was semi-finalist on the International Tuba-Euphonium Conference 2006 in Denver, USA, in the categories Tuba solo and Jazz.

In 2008 he won first prize (senior division) in the National Wind Instruments Competition "Terras de la Salette" and was a semi-finalist in the Tuba Solo International Competition in Markneunkirchen, Germany. After auditioning he was selected to join the Orchestre des Jeunes de la Mediterranée (France) in a tour in Turkey and taught a workshop in Finland where he played as a guest musician with the "UMO Jazz Orchestra" He plays regulary with the Oporto National Orchestra, the Lisbon Metropolitan Orchestra and the Gulbenkian Orchestra. In other diferent music styles he plays in the world music bands "Kumpania Algazarra" and “Dixie Gang”, electronic-acoustic band “Anisotropus”, the improvised music ensembles “Suspensão” and “IKB”, the jazz collective “Nelson Cascais Decateto”.

He is a founding member of Dixieland band “On Dixie”, the jazz duet “tête-À-tet” and the project “SubWoof3r” with Sérgio Carolino. In the last few years Gil has participated in the recording of some albums, namely, “Live at the Casa Da Musica, Porto”, “Stills” – Variable Geometry Orchestra; ”Tasca Beat, O Sonho Português”, “Oquestrada em Marcha!” – Oquestrada; “Steel aLive!” – Sérgio Carolino; “Ópera Premium” –Lisbon Metropolitan Orchestra; "Tora Tora Cult" – Tora Tora Big Band; “Veneno” – How Low Can You Go; “Ao Vivo FMM 2011”, “A Festa Continua”, “Acustic Express” – Kumpania Algazarra; “A Evolução da Forma” – Nelson Cascais Decateto; “O Amor Não Pode Esperar” – Pedro Moutinho; “Lu-pu-i-pi-sa-pa” – Luísa Sobral; "Anthropométrie Sans Titre", "Dracaena Draco" – IKB; "Sérgio Carolino Presents Mr SC & Wild Bones Gang" – Mr SC & Wild Bones Gang; “Olhos de Gigante” – Jorge Salgueiro; “Sirumba” – Linda Martini; “um quarto de século” – Dixie Gang e “Loow Looow” – SubWoof3r.
