ROBERT NUNEZ

Principal Tuba of the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra and the New Orleans Opera

Robert Nunez has performed as Principal Tuba of both the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra and the New Orleans Opera since 1992. He has taught as Adjunct Professor of tuba at the University of New Orleans and Tulane University. Mr Nunez has served as Professor of tuba at both Delgado University and Loyola University of New Orleans, and was previously on the Brass staff of the Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps from 1988-1996.

His teachers include legendary pedagogue Arnold Jacobs, former Principal Tuba of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Neal Tidwell former Principal Tuba of the former New Orleans Symphony and Richard Erb bass trombonist formerly with the New Orleans Symphony and now currently in the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra.

Mr Nunez has performed the Vaughn Williams Tuba Concerto with the Louisiana Philharmonic in the 1999- 2000 season. He has also performed with numerous brass ensembles including the Fanfare Brass Quintet performing as a school outreach ensemble for disadvantaged children, Louisiana Philharmonic Brass Quintet, and a founding member of Metropolis Brass Quintet while living in Houston after Hurricane Katrina. Mr Nunez has also performed with many dixieland groups in and around New Orleans since the age of 23 . He has also performed with the Louisiana Repertory Jazz Ensemble a group specializing in the early jazz masters music performed in the exact style. Robert Nunez has performed with the Ray Charles Orchestra backing up RAY CHARLES twice while he was touring in New Orleans ,and Backed up the MOODY BLUES twice while on tour also in New Orleans. In January 2008 he backed up the Rock band KANSAS and In February 2008 played with the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra and MARIACHI COBRE of Epcot Center Disney World.

Mr Nunez is a native of New Orleans born in the city and raised in Chalmette Louisiana an area devastated by hurricane Katrina. His family has strong historical ties to Louisiana and New Orleans with two branches of his family being colonists the Cantrell family 1724 in New Orleans and Nunez family 1789 in St Bernard Parish Louisiana.

Robert Nunez is the great grand son of alcide " Yellow " Nunez ( a native of St Bernard Parish)a pioneer dixieland clarinetist who performed with the Original dixieland Jazz Band, Louisiana Five, Moonlight Serenaders, and for Papa Jack Laines Reliance Bands from 1912-1934

After hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans on August 29, 2005 Robert Nunez moved to Houston Texas and served as a clinician in the Houston area schools and taught Privately in Northwest Houston where he also was a founding member of Metropolis Brass quintet.

In June 2007 Mr Nunez returned to his native city of New Orleans to resume his seventeenth year as principal tuba of the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra and a new endeavor with members of the Louisiana Philharmonic Brass Section a new brass ensemble THE NEW ORLEANS UPTOWN BRASS . Look for upcoming concerts by this exciting group soon. He also will continue to play New Orleans traditional Dixieland jazz with various groups around New Orleans.
