Dr. Clarkson (born 1985, Charleston, South Carolina) currently serves as Adjunct Professor of Low Brass and Instructor of Brass Methods at Charleston Southern University. Dr. Clarkson currently serves as a substitute musician for the Charleston Symphony Orchestra, Savannah Philharmonic, Albany Symphony, North Charleston Pops and Hilton Head Symphony. Before moving to South Carolina he was the Principal Tubist of the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Americas (POA) and the Westchester Chamber Symphony.
Dr. Clarkson has enjoyed success performing and teaching all over the United States and Mexico. Recently he received his Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Stony Brook University in New York (2014). While there he was under the guidance of both Alan Baer, New York Philharmonic, and Michael Powell, American Brass Quintet. Before attending Stony Brook, he attended Manhattan School of Music where he earned his Master of Music degree under Alan Baer (2010). In 2008, with the help of Dr. Joe Skillen, he graduated with his Bachelor of Arts degree from Louisiana State University.
Dr. Clarkson can be heard on two of POA's recordings under the Sony label, Mi Alma Mexicana and Travieso Carmesi. Dr. Clarkson is most notably the soloist in Revueltas' “Sensemaya” on the first album, Mi Alma Mexicana. He is also a founding member of several successful chamber ensembles. From the ITEC quartet finalist, Brown Bag Special, to two equally successful brass quintets, M5 and Vector Brass, Dr. Clarkson has enjoyed a multifaceted career with various types of ensembles. M5 was in residence at the Bravo Vail Valley Music Festival in 2010 and can be seen performing on WQXRʼs the McGraw Hill Young Artist Showcase. The other, Vector Brass, was the fellowship quintet for the Aspen Summer Music Festival in 2008. Dr. Clarkson was also a member of the World Champion Cavalier Drum and Bugle Corp. in 2006 (Machine).
He currently resides in Charleston, South Carolina and is available for masterclasses, lectures, and performances. His teachers include Alan Baer, Dr. Joe Skillen, Mike Powell, Seth Orgel, and Warren Deck.
