Principal Tuba of the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra (OBC) and Professor at the Superior School of Music of Catalonia (ESMUC)

Born in 1971, Pablo M. Fernández Garcia is the principal tuba of the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra since 1994 and professor of tuba, euphonium, orchestral repertoire and chamber music at the Superior School of Music of Catalonia since 2001. He was professor of tuba and euphonium at the prestigious ”Brass Academy Alicante" and also of the course ”Expert in Analysis and Musical Interpretation" offered by the Oviedo University within its postgraduate qualifications. His passion is aviation - he has a private pilot licence with a single engine qualification and flies a Cessna 172S.

Training and Professional Development

Pablo M. Fernández Garcia studied with Miguel Moreno Guna, professor at the Madrid Royal Conservatory, and Melvin Cultbertson, professor at the National Conservatorys of Bordeaux and Perpignan (France). He took courses and lectures by Roger Bobo (Los Angeles Symphony), Keith Brown and Harvey Phillips (Indiana University), Child Brothers, Dale Clevenger (Chicago Symphony), Warren Deck (New York Philharmonic), Walter Hilgers (German Brass), Miguel Navarro (ONE), Guy Oudenaert (Flemish Opera), Heiko Triebener (Bamberger Symphoniker) and Willem van der Vliet (Radio Filharmonish Orkest).

Pablo M. Fernández Garcia made numerous solo recitals, participated in concerts throughout the entire country and toured to Germany, France, UK, Austria, Netherlands, Romania, USA, Canada, Puerto Rico, Japan and China. In 2001 he performed the world premiere of ”Concerto for Tuba and Orchestra" by Pere Josep Puértolas within the season of the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra directed by Lawrence Foster. He works frequently as a guest professor at the National Youth Orchestra of Spain (JONDE) as well as the Catalonia National Youth Orchestra (JONC) and is a founding member of the ”Barcelona Trombone Quartet" (QTB) and of the ”Barcelona Brass Ensemble". He has made numerous recordings for Auvidis, BIS, Claves, Decca, EMI, Koch, Naxos and Telarc with outstanding international performers. With his orchestra he won the Latin Grammy for ”Best Classical Album" in 2000 with the CD ”La Dolores" and in 2006 with the CD ”Rhapsody in blue".

Pablo M. Fernández Garcia collaborated with the Galicia Symphony Orchestra, the Madrid Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic of Galicia, the Principality of Asturias Symphony Orchestra, the Spanish Radio and Television Symphony Orchestra, Cadaqués Symphony Orchestra, Vallés Symphony Orchestra, the Symphony Orchestra of Bordeaux Aquitaine and the ”Teatre Lliure" Chamber Orchestra as well as with renowned conductors and soloists such as Martha Argerich, Daniel Barenboim, Hildegard Behrens, Joshua Bell, Montserrat Caballé, Michel Camilo, Sarah Chang, Jesus Lopez Cobos, Hilary Hahn, Elihau Inbal, Dmitri Kitajenko, Yakov Kreizberg, Gidon Kremer, Emmanuel Krivine, Alicia de Larrocha, Ute Lemper, Radu Lupu, Misha Maisky, Marc Minkkowski, Shlomo Mintz, Truls Mork, James Morrison, Viktoria Mullova, Emmanuel Pahud, Michel Plasson, Josep Pons, Eva Pwodles, Vadim Repin, Mstislav Rostropovich, Matti Salminen, Lalo Schifrin, Leonard Slatkin, Arcadi Volodos, Christian Zacharias, Frank Peter Zimmermann, Pinchas Zukerman and many others.

In June 2012 he was part of the jury in the International Competition for Tuba and Euphonium held in the ”Brucknerhaus“ in Linz (Austria) at the International Conference ITEC 2012 organized by the International Tuba Euphonium Association (I.T.E.A.). In July 2014 he was the host of the ”AETYB Festival Barcelona 2014“, the first national meeting in the history of tuba and euphonium in Spain, organized by the Spanish Tuba Euphonium Association (AETYB), in collaboration with the Superior School Music of Catalonia (ESMUC) and the Catalan Tuba Euphonium Association (ACATUB).
